Tales of the Tamar

JANUARY 2012 TALES OF THE TAMAR   by Tom Worthy of Plymouth Angling

Well to put it mildly (weather pun) the southwest is fishing its socks off. We have Charter Skippers who have managed to get out between the howling gales catching double figure Ling, Cod and Pollock in the box full on the offshore wrecks. The shore anglers are probably having the best Cod fishing they have had for many a year with many doubles coming off the Tamar’s shore marks. There have been small boats fishing day and night from Barn Pool all the way up to the Armament Depot Pier catching Cod by the score. Cod from the shore have been more noticeable coming from Devils Point and Mutton Cove, Cremyll has seen a lot of Codling.

The Flounder season is well under way and some nice 3lb+ fish have come out of Kingsbridge and 2lb+ fromSt Johnslake but it has not been prolific which probably has something to do with the rain and mild weather of late. The Beaches of Slapton and Beesands are now throwing up a lot of Whiting in both daytime and at night, a lot of big mackerel are being caught from slapton on pop up float rigs.

WAYNE HAMBLEY 18LB 2OZ MASSIVE RIVER TAMAR BASS

Fishing one of his favourite marks in the river on his boat, Barry Kirby Jnr on a Cod hunt with one of his mates Wayne Hambley had a very pleasant surprise. What was supposed to have been a big Cod turned out to be a massive 18lb 2oz Bass, this is one of the biggest Bass to have come out of the river Tamar for a very long time. After a quick photo shoot they got the fish back into the water to fight another day. Not to be outdone Baz himself bagged a few Cod and his best of that session was a cracking 12lb 4oz fish.

The Cod have not just been limited to the boat anglers, Rob Yorke has had a few Cod out of the river Tamar this year and one of his biggest was this double figure fish at night

Rob Yorke with hisTamarShoreCod

Keeping in the Tamar now for Flounder, St Johns lake has seen a lot of activity but not many over 2lb have been landed,  Young Mathew Pean aged 8 caught his first ever Flounder of 2lb while out fishing with his dad Mike at St johns in January. Mathew showed his conservation mind by insisting that it was released straight away, well done young man.

Plymouth Angling Flounder Comp Results

Plymouth Angling held their Festive Flounder competition the week-end before Christmas with 109 anglers competing for the festive prize table. This was an open competition enabling the use of all the south west’s rivers and estuaries. The minimum weight for the comp was one and a half pounds but this didn’t stop just under forty fish being weighed in. Local Angling Media man Mike Millman was kind enough to present the prizes to all 16 Seniors and 3 Juniors who won prizes, all Juniors who fished the comp got a small prize. Congratulations to Ben Jones with his 3-3-13 Flounder and runner up was Steve King with a 3-0-8 fish. Ronnie Ash won the Juniors with a 2-9-4 Flounder. Here is a full list of the winners.

Junior Angler Profile

Charlie watts is 10 and has been mad about fishing since April 2010. As soon as he learned to fish he was hooked and is extremely keen to learn new things. He caught 2 rays this particular weekend in December 2011. He caught them just off Mt Edgecombe whilst out with Fred Doey in his boat. Fred has

been teaching Charlie the tricks of the trade. When Charlie goes out on Fred’s boat…. It is the only time he willingly sets his alarm for 6am and jumps out of bed

Plymouth & District Shore League

Although heat 10 has just complete the results are not yet finalised so I will continue with the information heat 9.

Shore league 2011 penultimate round saw a break in between the storms allowing anglers to find some good specimen fish including the first quality Flounder . Best fish of the heat was Terry Carters Mullet of 5-2 followed by Lee Evans Bull Huss of 11-14 and Lee Cruse Flounder 2-14-8.

Congratulations to Stonehouse A on what looks like being a fantastic year for them with probable winning positions in the league, most species and specimen points awards. 3 species is still being contested with the current leaders being Marlborough/Pot black B.

Steve Champion memorial tankard is up for grabs with no angler yet recording two different species of flatfish, pole position is Terry Carter if he can get a Flounder to go with his Plaice of 2-8-8 or anglers with a big Flounder go dabbing!!

Plymouth Angling Competitions 2012

The Breakwater tickets for both dates are selling well and over 70 have been sold so far to local anglers. Our theme is for this event is local venue / local comp / local anglers and this is proving invaluable to get 100 local anglers out onto the Breakwater for a 12 hour day and 12 hour night fish over the summer months with a little bit of competition element involved. Big thanks also goes to Devon Baits for being one of the sponsors for this event and providing one of their blast frozen bait packs to each competitor, this is a cash back competition with £1600 in the prize fund. All of our competitions are available to sign on at Plymouth Angling.
